"April Dawn" Quilt Garden, "Jazz It Up" Quilt Mural and
The Elkhart Dahlia Society designed the "April Dawn" Quilt Garden that is loosely interpreted from the April Dawn Dahlia orginated by Les Connell of the Washington State Dahlia Society. The flowers featured in this Quilt Garden are tried and true. Bronze and green leaf Eureka begonias in pink and red flowering versions provide color even if not in full bloom. Safari orange marigold gives a bright punch to the color palate. With the addition of Fields Blue ageratum, the designers have accented the palate with an opposing hue on the color wheel making this an analogous color scheme.

The "Jazz It Up" Quilt Mural celebrateds the musical heritage of Elkhart. Local artist, Laurie Balla took her inspiration for the mural from "The Jazz Player Quilt" by Janet Wickell. Balla created a unique and contemporary design featuring vibrant colors patterned from actual fabrics. It's connection to Elkhart's rich musical heritage comes to life in the silhouette of the jazz player who takes center stage in the mural. The silhouette is actually Balla and the saxophone she is holding is her grandfather's, who played in the Elkhart Municipal Band.

A "Jazz It Up" Quilt is on display inside The Grove food court. The quilt measures 60? X 80? and is top stitched with invisible acrylic thread. Working from the artist?s photo of the mural the quilter decided to add twice the amount of sunrays. A design template was drawn on muslin and transferred to the various fabrics. A simple topstitching enhances the ?rays? and the eggshell pattern on the sun gives it a three dimensional effect. The bold colors and designs of the fabric were selected at JoAnn Fabrics and Hobby Lobby. The quilt was created by Karen Kile, former Marketing Director of Concord Mall.
